Skimming & Re-Skimming
A skim coat is the thin smooth finish that turns tired, patched or uneven walls into a flat, paint-ready surface. We skim and re-skim homes across Yorkshire — from a single wall to a full house — with a clean, careful finish that's ready for paint or wallpaper.
When you might need skimming
- Walls or ceilings look tired, patched or uneven after wallpaper has been stripped.
- You want a fresh, flat finish before decorating a room.
- Existing plaster is sound but no longer smooth enough to paint over.
- You're moving in and want a clean canvas in the main rooms.
How Parkinson Plastering helps
- Free, no-pressure quote with an honest opinion on whether a skim is enough.
- Proper prep — dust sheets down, sockets and radiators worked around cleanly.
- Tidy daily clean-up so the rest of the house stays liveable.
- A flat, paint-ready finish backed by 30+ years' hands-on experience.
A note from Carl: If the underlying plaster has blown or come away from the wall, a skim on top is a waste of money — we'll always say so and recommend a full re-plaster instead.

How much does skimming cost in Yorkshire?
Every skimming job is different — the state of the existing walls makes more difference than the size of the room — but here are honest 2026 ranges for a normal Yorkshire home so you've got a rough idea before I come and quote.
| Job | Typical range | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Single feature wall (standard height) | £180 – £250 | One coat over sound existing plaster |
| Small bedroom — walls & ceiling | £450 – £700 | Around 3m x 3m, standard prep |
| Large living room — walls & ceiling | £800 – £1,200 | Bigger rooms, more sockets, radiators, coving to work around |
| Whole 3-bed house re-skim | £2,500 – £4,500 | All main rooms, over a few days |
Guide ranges only — every job is different. Quotes are always free and there's no pressure.
What affects the price
- Condition of the existing plaster — sound walls skim quickly, patchy or wallpaper-stripped walls need a bonding coat first.
- Whether the ceiling is included as well as the walls — ceilings take longer per square metre.
- How many sockets, radiators, coving runs and pipe boxings we need to cut around cleanly.
- Ceiling height — anything over standard 2.4m means working off a hop-up or small tower.
- Access and parking — a tight terrace with no drive costs a bit more than a semi with easy access.
What's involved
- Free look round first, then a written price so you know exactly where you stand.
- Furniture pulled out or covered, dust sheets down on floors, doorways sealed off so the rest of the house stays clean.
- Prep — sanding down any nibs, taping joints, filling deep dinks, and a coat of PVA or bonding on chalky surfaces so the skim keys properly.
- First coat of finish plaster on, flattened off, then a tight second coat and trowelled up to a smooth, closed finish.
- Full clean-up at the end — sheets rolled, floors hoovered and mopped, and the plaster left ready for you to paint.
How long does it take?
A single wall is normally a half-day. A standard bedroom (walls and ceiling) is a full day on site. A larger living room usually takes a day and a half. Then it wants 3–5 days to dry in a normally heated home before a watered-down mist coat of paint — rushing this is the main reason new plaster ends up patchy.
